Philips announces new TiVo-like DVRs at IFA

Filed under:

Word on the street is that Philips has decided to dip its collective toes into the DVR world with a new line of products that appear, at least ostensibly, to compete with TiVo. Like the "TiVo Suggestions" feature that the recorder-company offers, Philips' new devices tout user preference tracking, which will "learn" different user's likes and dislikes, and create custom sets of programming geared towards those tastes. The new line will also be able to access and download YouTube and other internet video, as well as podcast content. Advertising on the new boxes will also follow user's watching habits, thus ensuring a steady flow of laser-targeted ads beamed directly at your face. Apparently the new products will begin their lifecycle as software for PCs, but will eventually become set-top boxes for the living room. What's really interesting here is that Philips used to manufacture TiVo hardware, which increases the chances of cross-pollination (and lawsuits) oh... about tenfold.

Apple to unleash "The Circle" concept tomorrow?

Filed under:

Wow, it's 6PM and we're only on our third semi-substantial iPod rumor for the day? Frankly, we're disappointed. The latest word to sweep the internets is that Apple is prepping to get all up in Zune's "The Social" grill with "The Circle." Unfortunately, that's the only word on the service / products so far, other than that it's going to be centered around video. So player-to-player video sharing? New branding for existing video products? Steve Jobs is starting a cult? Free Sesame Street song with every iPod? We really have no idea, but we'll be finding out soon enough.

Fujitsu's LOOX T70XN laptop: now in a multitude of colors

Filed under:

Just in case Fujitsu's colorful new line of LOOX U50XNs weren't enough for ya, the outfit is also giving a vivid facelift to its LOOX T70XN. This ultraportable sports a 10.6-inch LED-backlit display, a 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo U7600 processor, up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, between 80GB and 100GB of hard drive space, and Intel's GMA950 graphics set. Moreover, this bad boy can get up to 13.8-hours of battery life when hooked up with optional cells, and connectivity shouldn't be an issue considering the built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, 56k modem, 4-pin FireWire, twin USB 2.0 sockets, multicard reader, and audio / in outs. This well-spec'd little machine can be had right now for around $2,650 depending on options, but it's the nine color choices that are likely to give you the most pause when ordering.

Palm kills the Foleo dead

We are seriously not going to take credit for this, but holy crap, Palm just cancelled the Foleo, just like we asked them to! Palm CEO Ed Colligan just posted a message to the company's official blog stating that they've decided to cancel the Foleo mobile companion "in its current configuration" in order to "focus all of our energies on delivering out next generation platform and the first smartphones that will bring this platform to market." In a way we're sort of disappointed that we'll never at least get to play with one and put it through its paces, but it's definitely the right move -- Palm needs to focus on one thing right now, and that's coming out with a category-killing smartphone. Not that they're giving up on the idea for good; Ed says that they'll do a "Foleo II" based on the new mobile platform they're already developing for their next generation of smartphones.

Mercedes brings Google, Yahoo maps to your vehicle

Some German drivers can already send data straight from Google Maps to their BMW's GPS unit, but it looks like certain Mercedes owners can now get in on the act as well, and be able to do the same with Yahoo Local Maps to boot. That oft-desired feature is the centerpiece of Mercedes-Benz's new Search & Send service, which'll work with '07 S-Class, CL-Class, and '08 C-Class vehicles equipped with the Multimedia Package and Navigation System. Apparently, you'll also be able to give friends and family access to the system as well, which will let them send directions straight to you while you're on the road. While the service itself is available at no added charge, you'll first need a subscription to Mercedes' Tele Aid System, a complimentary first year one of which is available to those opting for the Security and Care package with their vehicle.

Disney-themed USB keys lock kids into childish environments

Filed under:

While we've seen USB-based peripherals that aim to keep your youngsters in a safe and innocent PC environment, Bandai and Buffalo have teamed up to make kid-friendly computing a bit more bearable. The duo has crafted a unique USB key, which is slated to be available in Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh versions, that simultaneously locks the PC into "Kid Mode," password protects the parent's session in the background, and opens up a world of mom-approved fun for the little ones to enjoy. The software that resides on the key includes a dedicated browser for safe surfing, a time regulator to keep them from growing addicted, and options for parents to select precisely what apps their offspring can / can't access. Reportedly, the units are expected to land in mid-September over in Japan, and while pricing has yet to be confirmed, we're hearing it'll run you around ¥3,480 ($30).

A-DATA unveils 16GB SDHC Class 6 flash card, amongst others

Filed under:

16GB SDHC cards aren't all that atypical these days, but A-DATA is claiming to have the "world's first 16GB SDHC Class 6" iteration ready to roll. Additionally, the firm is introducing an 8GB Super SDHC Duo (saywha?) card of the Class 4 variety, and for those still scouting a new CompactFlash card, it's cranking out a 32GB version for you. Regrettably, we've no idea how soon A-DATA plans to get these on the market (nor how much it plans to charge), but it shouldn't be long before we all find out.

Panasonic shows off big and bright LED display

Filed under:

It's far from the biggest LED display we've seen, but Panasonic's new Astrovision/AZ-LE12F series display is certainly impressive enough in its own right, thanks in no small part to its blinding 5,000 cd/m2 brightness rating. At over 13 feet across and nearly ten feet high, it's also hard to go unnoticed, which appears to be the intention as the first such display has now been installed in the new "Qiball" building in Chiba City, Japan. Passers-by should also be able to get a good look at the display thanks to its wide 145 degree horizontal viewing angle and 80 degree vertical viewing angle, with the display also promising "excellent RGB blending" from its 3-in-1 LEDs. Sadly, there's no word on a home version just yet, so it looks like you'll have to make do with some of the slightly smaller options currently at your disposal.

Transparent Toaster gives you clear view of bread's crispiness

Filed under:

You know, it'd be quite nice for toaster manufacturers to actually grab hold of one of the numerous concepts floating around out there and give the tried and true machine a facelift, but until then, conceptualizers are keepin' the ideas a-coming. On deck is the Transparent Toaster, which hopes to utilize clear panes of "heating glass" that allow you to clearly see precisely how burnt your bread is becoming. Of course, we'd certainly hope some sort of self-cleaning apparatus would be added if this thing were to go commercial, but it ain't a half bad idea as it is.

BT Baby Monitor 150 plays voices, MP3s to impressionable children

Filed under:

Good news parents, Labor Day doesn't mean you just get work off anymore, now you can leave your young children in the care of the BT Baby Monitor 150 and really get that rest you deserve. The device can record your voice for playback to little Timmy in his crib -- he'll never know the difference. You can also hook an MP3 player to the 150, load up some Beehtoven and 50 Cent and you're set. Other features include an intercom for parent talk-back, and an alarm. As far as we can tell, this one is only available in the UK, so we suppose we'll have to import one for next year. They go for £69.99, about $141 US.

Non-recalled Nokia phone battery explodes, injures woman

Filed under:

While Nokia and Matsushita were busying settling the disputes that arose when the phone maker had to recall some 46 million handset batteries, a lady in India has been injured by a Nokia-branded cell that's not on that list. Located in eastern India, the woman noted that the BL-D3 series battery "blew up about 10 minutes after it was put on charge," resulting in a "ball of fire" that led to minor burn injuries to the user. According to Nokia, the incident was "isolated," and if it finds that the handset, battery, and charger are original, the 30-year old victim will supposedly be compensated.

Hands-on / roadtest with the TomTom GO 720

That said, TomTom's slickly designed and elegantly executed 720 is a seriously welcome addition to our navigational world, and frankly, we'll be sad to see the little guy go.

Keepin' it real fake, part LXXV: MA-727 apes Samsung's T9B

There's blatant knockoffs, and then there's blatant knockoffs. As you can probably tell, this is most certainly a case of the latter, as the so-called creators of the MA-727 didn't even bother to take their own photo. Instead, it looks pretty clear that they simply doctored Samsung's own snapshot of the T9B, threw a pink miniSD card down beneath, and called it original. Sure, it can supposedly handle just about every format under the sun and touts a 2.4-inch display, built-in speaker, FM tuner, voice recorder, rechargeable Li-ion, and anywhere between 128MB and 2GB of internal storage, but we wouldn't recommend pulling the trigger on this one unless you've got more money than sense.

Toyota looking to develop recharging points for plug-in hybrids?

Epson eats their own, launches TW2000 1080p 3LCD projector

Here it is, Epson's first 3LCD projector to take advantage of their new 0.74-inch HTPS panels already spotted in Mitsubishi and Sanyo projectors. The EMP-TW2000 starts with a trio of Epson-built, 0.74-inch, 1,920 x 1,080 C2FINE LCD panels with D7 process technology, 12-bit LCD driver, and updated OptiFocus engine with DeepBlack phase compensation technology. They then bust a rated 50,000:1 dynamic contrast at 1,600 lumens off a 170W UHE (E-TORL) bulb while supporting x.v.Color over a pair of HDMI v1.3 inputs -- component, S-Video, and D-Sub 15 PC input sprinkled in for fun. Nicely done Epson. Yours in Japan later this month for about ¥350,000. That'll be a tax-inclusive $3,020 when it comes Stateside under the PowerLite Pro Cinema branding. IOGEAR's presentation mouse, 4GB wallet drive ready for class

We know, "back to school" isn't exactly a phrase that brings a smile to most students, but IOGEAR is hoping to get you a bit more jazzed up than usual about the fall semester with a new duo of products. Following the Digital Scribe, the firm has now unveiled a 4GB Flash Wallet Drive and 3-in-1 Wireless Phaser Presentation Mouse to presumably help you with your studies. The uber-thin wallet drive ($69.95) measures in at just 3-millimeters thick and ought to hold quite a few research papers, while the wireless mouse ($59.95) combines a laser pointer and track ball to aid you in making those presentations go as smoothly as possible. Both products should already be available at your campus store or nearby big box retailer.

PlayStation 3 firmware v1.92 out

Ok, so we can confirm Sony's just pushed out the PlayStation 3 v1.92 update, the first new firmware in over a month. Update: The update appears limited to performance enhancements for the PlayStation Store and PS2 game support -- minor updates in line with a point-0-0 release.

Heart muscle tissue powers new body roaming robots

Filed under:

While we've seen a microbot that crawls across hearts, a new creature has been developed by gurus at Chonnam National University in South Korea that actually gets its energy from the heart. Reportedly, the team created the robot by "growing heart muscle tissue from a rat onto tiny robotic skeletons made from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)," and the result is an E-shaped creature that can move its own legs through the "relaxing and contracting of heart muscle cells." Currently, the bot has been clocked scurrying along at a stagering 100 micrometers-per-second, and while it isn't apt to win any races, it could be loosed within the body to "clear blocked tubes or arteries" in the future. Check the video of this wild guy in action right here.

Sony: Rolly is an audio player (and more)

Sony's official Rolly blog has confirmed what we already thought: Rolly is in fact a digital audio player without a display. They also claim that it has only one button which controls the "play / stop" of audio and is "basically the only button you use." Although this picture shows what appears to be a cluster of three in addition to a glowing blue, elliptical button. Of course, as we've seen in the Walkman W910 phone, Sony offers other ways to control music without buttons. Namely, an accelerometer coupled with Sony's new Shake control software would allow you to flick the Rolly right or left to advance or jump-back tracks; shake it to shuffle-up the music. That would be particularly useful in Bluetooth-shy Japan where Rolly is being heavily marketed. Whatever the case, Rolly is surely more than just a DAP as we've seen in the video, but that's as much as Sony will own-up to for the time being.

Update: Well what do you know, digital lifestyles spoke to some "senior" Sony sources who consider Rolly a "music-focused Wii on wheels." Seems like an integrated accelerometer with Shake control might be in the cards, indeed.

Build your own underwater ROV for $250

Granted, this here project isn't nearly as inexpensive as the $100 underwater ROV from years back, but at least this one is propelled by something a bit more advanced than a pull string. Regardless, the ROV-in-a-Box Project Kit -- created by folks from Carl Hayden High School for use in the National Underwater Robotics Challenge -- is a $249.95 package that "includes all the parts needed to build a working underwater robot: a frame, motors, underwater light, camera, 50-foot tether, operator control box, and a dry-cell battery." Of course, you'll still be required to provide your own tools and TV monitor, but to take a closer look at exactly what a nickel under $250 will buy you, click on through for a detailed video (but do tap Mute beforehand, okay?).

Sony's video download cards revealed?

The Wall Street Journal -- citing "people familiar with the situation" -- claims that Sony is poised to enter video-downloading services whole-hog. Think Go!PSP, only extended with new "products and services to let users download television shows and movies" to Sony's sweet, suite of PS3s, PSPs, and Bravia televisions "similar to the way" people use the Apple ecosystem. Go!PS3, Go!Bravia, Go!Rolly? Sure, why not. Unfortunately, the WSJ piece doesn't provide any dates or any real details to speak of. Regardless, none of this comes as a surprise what with PS3s doubling as DVRs in Europe, video-capable Walkmans finally released in the US, and the looming shutdown of Sony's ATRAC-based Connect music services. Hell, Stringer already ceded portable music dominance to Apple back at the June shareholders meeting in Tokyo where he noted that Sony has "worked very hard to catch up so that in the age of video we will not suffer as much as we did in audio." We'll see. Hey Howie (sorry, Sir Howie), we hear NBC could use a new on-line storefront soon. You know, quick-wins and all.

DualCor sues Intel over Dual Core name

DualCor Technologies may be using some Intel hardware in its cPC handheld, but that apparently doesn't mean the two see eye to eye all the time, with the former company now suing the latter over its use of (you guessed it) the "Dual Core" name. According to The Inquirer, DualCor (which changed its name from GCVI in December 2003) says it trademarked "DualCor" in May of 2004, and claims that Intel knew about the name as early as December of 2003. Now, DualCore is saying that by using the "Dual Core" name, Intel is "likely to cause confusion, mistake or deception among consumers as to the source quality and nature of DualCor's goods." As a result, DualCor is looking for more than a million dollars in damages, as well as an injunction to prevent Intel from using the "Dual Core" name any further. No word from Intel just yet, it seems, although we're guessing its lawyers are hard at work on a "we can spell better than them" defense.

Chicago cop chases down gunman on Segway

Filed under:

Believe it or not, Chicago policeman Thaddeus Martyka isn't the first cop to chase down a crook with the help of a Segway, but nevertheless, the two-wheeled wonder is to thank for yet another arrest. Whilst patrolling the streets and enjoying the summer breeze, the officer heard shots fired and decided to wheel over and see what the commotion was all about. Sure enough, the baddies were found scurrying away from the scene of a crime, and while one suspect managed to escape, the other wasn't so fortunate. Purportedly, the Segway reached a top speed of 12.5mph, which proved plenty fast to capture (and likely humiliate) at least one of the ill-willed individuals.
