Dell XPS M1730 slips, now launching September 21st

We can't ever guarantee launch dates on an unannounced product, but it looks like Dell's internal shipment date for the new XPS M1730 just slipped, and has been pushed back to September 21st for the US, Europe, and Asia. Here's the latest specs list (sorry, not much there has changed since before):

• Intel Core 2 Duo up to 2.6GHz (X7800, 4MB cache)
• Up to 4GB DDR2 667 RAM, Intel PM965 chipset
• 17-inch WUXGA TrueLife (1920x1200)
• Single or SLI 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8700M GT
• Regular and SSD drive options
• Blu-ray drive
• (6) USB 2.0, 1394, DVI out, S-Video, gigabit Ethernet, IR
• 54mm ExpressCard (with travel remote)
• 802.11a/b/g/n, 3G WWAN, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
• 10.6 pound starting weight, 2-inch thick chassis

HP Blackbird 002 coming on Monday?

We, along with a number of other publications, just got tipped off to HP's plans to launch a new desktop called the HP Blackbird 002 next week. (Sorry, no, we think it's separate from the HP Virtus we already saw.) The email's after the break, but the long and short of it is Voodoo seems to be marrying its high performance PC line with HP branding. The short list of what you need to know:

• BIOS-based overclocks
• Heat-optimized aluminum chassis and foot
• Liquid cooling system for CPUs and GPUs
• Tool-free upgrades for CPU, GPU, drives
• Pricing between $2500 and $6500, ouch!

Apple and AT&T hit with third class action suit over iPhone battery

Apple's lack of a roll-your-own battery replacement for the iPhone seems to be causing quite a stir with Apple and AT&T's legal departments as a third class-action lawsuit has been thrown at them. Plaintiffs Zoltan Stiener and Ynez Stiener cite breach of contract, fraud, and violations of California law for not letting users know that the replacement costs can be upwards of $100 -- we're assuming this includes the cost of a rental replacement iPhone. Apple has settled in previous cases of this type -- well, in an iPod case at any rate -- so we'll have to wait and see how it all comes out before jumping on any class-action bandwagons.

Fraunhofer's Surround Vision lets projectors get curvy

Those prolific folks at the Fraunhofer Institute recently took the wraps off yet another invention of theirs, this one promising to let projectors do things they've never done before (or at least let 'em do it more easily). More specifically, its "Surround Vision" software will automatically calibrate projectors to allow for images to be projected on surfaces of any shape with "pixel-precise accuracy". What's more, according to Gizmag, the system can apparently be used "in principle" with any type of projector. While it seems unlikely that many folks will be reworking their home theaters to take advantage of the system, the Fraunhofer folk see no shortage of other applications for the technology, including trade show booths, theme parks, simulators, and planitariums, to name a few.

Hands-on with the Samsung T10 PMP at IFA

When we first heard about the "animated menus" of the T10, we had our doubts, but after playing around with the youth-oriented PMP, we've decided it gets a thumbs up. The ultralight, ultrathin media player felt practically weightless in our hands, but its screen was bright and crisp, and those frenetic, PaRappa the Rapper-like animations definitely make for an interesting UI -- certainly like no other player on the market right now. Check out the gallery for pictures which will shock and amaze.

Sony's IFA booth tour

The Sony booth screamed "budget cuts" after the Samsung and LG extravagance we had just witnessed -- at its worst moments, we though we were looking at Best Buy shelves -- but Sony isn't really putting out a lot of new product at this year's show, so it's understandable. We've already seen the new S-series in person anyways, which is pretty much Sony's highlight of the show, so we'll let 'em slide this year.

Hands-on with Sony's new T200 and T70 touchscreen cameras

Sure, smile-detection might smell of gimmickry, but we like Sony's new touchscreen T200 and T70 cameras all the same. Normally we'd say bigger is better for LCDs, but the T200 looks like someone did a shoddy job of scaling the T70's screen up to size -- same amount of pixels, now with more blur.
